Taking Care of Mom and Dad

About Me

Taking Care of Mom and Dad

At the beginning of your life, your parents take care of you, but when you reach middle age, the tables turn, and you need to take care of your parents. That can involve helping your parents to find an assisted living facility or a nursing home. To quickly explain, assisted living is independent living with a bit of extra help such as a group lunch room or an emergency alert system in each apartment. A nursing home, in contrast, provides comprehensive care for patients with a wide range of issues from dementia to arthritis. This blog is designed to help you make those tough decisions. It's also going to include posts on home health care, staying in touch with relatives in nursing homes, and more. I wish you the best through this sometimes difficult part of the journey with your parents.

Getting Older? Choose Senior Living When You Need It

If you are getting older and live alone, there will be a time when you cannot take care of yourself. One thing you can do is choose a senior living home. This will ensure you have a safe place to live and will not have to depend on family members to take care of you. Keep reading to learn about different types of senior living housing options so you can find one for yourself.

Live Independently

If you do not require a lot of help you can live independently. The senior living service can still provide you with housekeeping services and you have access to dining options. Most senior living facilities have dining areas that everyone can go to. This gives you time to socialize with other people at the facility. You may get an apartment to live in or choose a home on the property. What is available depends on the living facility you choose.

You may also hear these senior living services referred to as retirement communities, which is where people that retire may choose to live. This is especially beneficial if you do not live close to any family members.

Care Homes

If you need more care, such as 24-hour assistance, you can choose a care home. You will have some independence if you choose this but can be provided with your daily living. For example, you may need help getting in and out of the bathtub. The service provides transportation in many cases so you can go to doctor's appointments, pick up medications at a pharmacy, and more.

As with living independently, care homes have homes or apartments available for you. Homes are generally more expensive, so this is something to consider. With apartments, you are closer to other residents.

Assisted Living Facilities

Another option is assisted living which provides you with nursing care along with living in your own apartment or home. The nurse can check your medications for you, assist you with day-to-day activities, check your blood pressure, and much more.

Assisted living facilities often have chefs on the premises to make food for the residents. They also have different activities available for their residents that you can enjoy. This may be gardening, drawing, and much more.

Memory Care Facilities

If you start having problems with your memory, such as dementia symptoms, there are memory care facilities you can choose. Some assisted living facilities offer memory care as well. Memory care facilities offer more services to you depending on your level of memory loss.

If you need memory care, you should contact your family to help you choose what would be best for you. Memory care will ensure you are safe and cannot leave the grounds, provide you with all your daily living activities, and much more.

Once you choose the type of senior living facility you need, visit many of them until you find one you like. Contact a local senior living service to learn more.
